Scoot off to school... safely14/01/2014 08:59:51 Carol Atkinson
Children from primary schools across Darlington (the first being Springfield and High Coniscliffe) are receiving training to ride their scooters more safely on the journey to and from school. Members of Team Local Motion are visiting schools throughout the borough to deliver a full day of tuition to help prepare pupils for real-life situations and give them the skills and awareness to respond safely.
Working with all classes the sessions, the sessions cover specifics such as how to ride safely, crossing the road safely and being aware of pedestrians and vehicles..
Both schools already mentioned have also received funding to install scooter pods in their grounds.
The training scheme was introduced after figures from the recent Travel survey revealed that 387 children from schools across Darlington choose to scoot to school - an increase on last year.
Councillor David Lyonette, the council's cabinet memember for transport, said: "We saw that scooter training was needed and was something we could offer schools to ensure all children choosing to scoot to school were doing so in a safe and responsible way."
